| THE ASAPH MUSIC LETTER ENCOURAGING BELIEVERS TO SET AND MAINTAIN A BIBLICAL MUSIC STANDARD To the chief musician and his choir Vol. 4--No. 3--April 30, 2005
(Go easy on your eyes. Print this letter for a more enjoyable read.) “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” —Ephesians 5:19 HENRY H. HALLEY ON MUSIC, PART 3--This will be the last installment we’ll do of the musical comments by Dr. Henry H. Halley. We trust you’ll enjoy them. Song leaders. Church generally have so little congregational singing that they appoint no leader for the one or two verses of the one or two hymns that they announce. Result: congregational singing, the one part of the service that people love most, the one thing that is a church’s chief expression of its praise to God, so often, is little more than a farce. Every congregation ought to have a song leader: not one who imitates the silly antics of a certain prevalent type of revival song evangelists, who seem to treat a service mainly as an occasion to show-off their monkey-shines and wise-cracks, and as a preliminary setting for their own solos: but one who believes in congregational singing. It is possible to be a song leader, and yet retain something of the dignity and pulpit decorum proper to the profession. Choirs. What a good choir can mean to a service is beyond computation. But it depends on what they sing. How often have we heard choir performances that added nothing whatever to the religious value of the service! But, even at best, it is better that the people sing than that they listen to singing. Why not turn the whole congegation into a choir? Under proper leadership, the hymns of a vast congregation could be made to rise like the swell of an ocean’s roar, and cause angels in Heaven to lean over and listen.
